The Maverick Grotto was begun by a small group of Ft. Worth caving enthusiasts in October of 1986. Since that time we have had new members join and old members move away or move onto other pursuits. We have members involved in different aspects of caving including exploration, mapping, cave science and electronics, vertical techniques, photography, restoration, and cave diving.
We are a collection of people from diverse walks of life
with one thing in common: a love of caves. The
"Grotto" is a club affiliated
with the
National Speleological Society, and although membership in the national
organization is not required it is highly recommended. The grotto exists to provide fellowship for people
interested in caving, and as a contact point for people
who are interested in learning more about caves. The
Grotto Motto is the same as that of the NSS: Take nothing but pictures, leave
nothing but footsteps, and kill nothing but time.
Our members have participated in cave trips within Texas
as well as in New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri,
Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky,
California, Northern Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula,
Central America, Great Britain, Spain, and the Canary
Islands, among other places. We try to put together
grotto trips geared toward new cavers on a regular basis,
but at least twice a year.

Members also participate individually as well as
collectively with members of other Texas caving clubs in
regional project trips on a regular basis. At our monthly
meetings we conduct club business and schedule
presentations from club members, visiting cavers, or
media presentations that should be of interest to anyone
with an interest in caving. These meetings are a great
place to learn about upcoming trips.
