Welcome

This the home page of

The Maverick Grotto

The Maverick Grotto was founded in 1986 by people from Fort Worth, Tarrant County and surrounding areas.  Our purpose is to enjoy the study and exploration of caves.  Our members have participated and still participate in a number caving projects in Texas and other areas.

The Maverick Grotto welcomes visitors and potential new members who have similar interests to our own.  If you are interested in caving, attend one of our meetings and see if your interests and ours coincide!

Please browse our site  and let us know if you have questions or an interest in:

Caving!

Where are the Caves?

This is a question we get a lot!  We can tell you there are no known caves in Dallas or Tarrant County which means some driving time for cave explorers from this area.  There are many caves in the Edwards Plateau area of Central Texas.  There are also caves in far West Texas and North Texas.  Cavers don't provide specific access or location information to anyone but landowners (information on their caves only) and other cavers.  This is for the protection of landowners and the environment.  To learn the location of non-commercial caves, it's necessary to get involved with a caving organization and learn caving ethics.

For more information on Cave statistics and counties with caves, check out the County Statistics page at the Texas Speleology Survey (TSS) website.

For information on Texas Commercial Caves, see these links.
